Thanks for the list. I would argue that Larry Ellison and Peter Thiel are effectively Israeli billionaires even if they do not live there. Billionaires have no nationality. But some are deeply invested in militarizing Israel
Technology, control of finance, and other factors are critical too and workers are victims, but they are not entirely innocent. By the way, I am more critical of the US than of Israel, I part because the US
I do not accept many of the assumptions presented here to start with. The way the US and Israel have become tools for multinational private equity is the most critical point. John, you keep referring to Israeli billionaires but you are not naming the names. Are you talking about Adelson, Elison? Or others? Many billionaires who use Israel Palestine as a testing ground for weapons are not Jewish or Israeli. But the bottom line is this, what makes the lives of working people in Israel and US marginally, or substantially, better than other countries? It is the position of those two countries in the geopolitical and financial food chain. Imperialism cannot be understood simply as a global class struggle, even if class is a major factor. Ideology,
Apparently you never actually read my article, or you would have known that it links to these lists of Israeli billionaires by name. I suggest you read my article.
I can agree with the basic idea but I think we must acknowledge that although working class Americans and Israelis are victims too, that they benefit to some degree from the global financial system and cannot be seen as victims in the same way we see Palestinians or Native Americans.
If you agree with the basic idea (that Israeli government violence against Palestinians is for the purpose of enabling the billionaire rulers of Israel to oppress the Israeli Jewish working class), then I hope you realize that expressing the basic idea is the ONLY--repeat, ONLY-- way to persuade people who want to be "on the side of the Jews" to be anti-Zionist. (At least half the American public does want to be "on the side of the Jews" which is why the U.S. government is able to get away with its pro-Israel policy.)
I hope you thus realize how CRUCIAL it is (for the sake of the Palestinians!!) to express the basic idea as forcefully and as widely as possible.
I hope you realize that while there are other criticisms that can be truthfully made against the Israeli government, doing so while failing to express the basic idea does nothing to persuade people who want to be "on the side of the Jews" to oppose the Israeli government's violent ethnic cleansing. I hope, therefore, that you will express the basic idea, and not use the fact (yes, it is a fact) that working class Americans and Israeli Jews are not victims in the same way as Palestinians as an EXCUSE for not expressing the basic fact as widely and as loudly as possible. Right?
And by the way, it is absurd to say that working class people in the U.S. or Israel "benefit to some degree from the global financial system." That system is one that oppresses working class people. To say that it benefits them to some degree is as absurd as Hillary Clinton saying that white working class people benefit from the system of racial discrimination against non-whites, with "white privilege." If you do not understand this, then read about it at https://www.pdrboston.org/is-it-a-privilege-not-to-be .
If you do not understand that the lives of U.S. and Israeli working class people would be PROFOUNDLY better in an egalitarian world instead of one based on today's "global financial system" then you are profoundly wrong. People do NOT "benefit to some degree" from a system that makes their lives profoundly worse than they would otherwise be.
I agree with most of what you say. But I do not retract what I say. Working Americans and Israelis do benefit in various ways from the global financial system even if they are also oppressed in their society. Such contradictions are real and we must be aware of them.
Emanuel, you have been for many years an outspoken critic of Israel, in speeches and your writing. Would you please point me to where you have explained to your audience the basic idea (that Israeli government violence against Palestinians is for the purpose of enabling the billionaire rulers of Israel to oppress the Israeli Jewish working class). I have not been able to find any such examples. I would like to read (or listen to) your words to see how you do it.
Surely you do not mean by "Such contradictions are real and we must be aware of them" that we should NOT be shouting from the roof tops the crucial basic idea, right?
I have urged you in the past to express this basic idea and I have explained that failure to do so is what enables the U.S. government to maintain the support of the U.S. population for Israel that it requires in order to keep supporting Israel as it does.
But, i think we could probably find an historical comparison. Every nation on earth has experienced an attrocity related to the have and have nots.
My hertiage of african and scottish irish in uk. Reminds me that the irish specfically catholic were 2nd class citizens. Not allowed education pass a certain age, not allow to have profession, left to starve, not allowed to practice the catholic faith. Many even of the scottish highland catholics were pushed from their homes(set on fire) and sent to the coast. Or abroad to the colonies. There previous chieftian now a laird. Privatising the land to farm sheep. The industrial revolution smashing up a way of life. Literally forcing into the large buildings and factories. And war itself. Sending young men to defend oil fields in another nation. I have a scottish great uncle part of an irish brigade. Buried in Basra. 1916.
I wish we still had one of the best spokespeople for seeing behind the curtain -

My article at https://www.pdrboston.org/israel-s-government-attacks-jews-to links to lists of the billionaires. One link goes to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Israelis_by_net_worth .
