While reading some politics the other day I bumped into yet another person who described various groups of people as “lazy.” Should a person wish to be taken seriously in any political discourse, they need to remove the word “lazy” from their political lexicon. The word lazy is a smelly old political trope of a word that is used to persuade a person, to stop a person from looking further into an issue, to quell any feelings of suspicion one might have when pondering the state of the world. Half the world’s population resides on an arc that goes from abject poverty at one end to living (if you want to call it that) paycheque to paycheque at the other. These four billion people are not lazy. These are people whose lives are being impacted by forces beyond their control and, when you investigate further, these forces, which are always profit-motivated, begin to show themselves as it’s impossible to hide from those who take even a cursory second look. As well, these profit-motivated forces are huge, bloated and slow-moving, too big to hide so they don’t bother trying. Only those who conclude their inquiry at “lazy,” which is exactly the point at which these forces want you to stop thinking, it’s these people who will never see the cause of humanity’s despair. Or rather, they see the cause as laziness.
