Liberalism = Anti-egalitarianism
Liberal Boston Globe celebrates workers not even being paid a living wage as a "victory"
My local newspaper, the Boston Globe, today ran a column celebrating a so-called ‘union victory’ by personal care attendants; the article is online here.
This is the routine, disgusting anti-egalitarian propaganda from the oh-so-liberal Boston Globe, owned by the billionaire John Henry. This Globe columnist-- Yvonne Abraham (one of the most liberal of all the columnists)—gushes about how wonderful it is that now, after union negotiations with the state, personal care attendants will get a raise to bring their wage up to $19/hr. Abraham in her infinite wisdom chooses not to mention some key facts:
#1. Where the Globe is published in Suffolk County, MA, the living wage for a single person with no children is much more than $19/hr; it is $24.23/hr. And for a single person with just one child it is $51.85/hr. [source: https://livingwage.mit.edu/counties/25025 ]
#2. People should be paid more (for a given amount of work) if they have more people to support with their income. The egalitarians who made an egalitarian revolution in about half of Spain in 1936 instituted this principle and called it a "family wage" (and in some areas they didn't even use money at all but adopted the principle discussed in #3 below.
#3. The morally just principle (that was implemented in many areas of Spain in 1936-9 during the revolution there) is "From each according to reasonable ability, to each according to need or reasonable desire with scarce things equitably rationed according to need." Doctors and janitors thus should enjoy the same standard of living. A personal care attendant who works reasonably according to ability should enjoy a standard of living no lower than anybody else, including Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk and Bill Gates.
But of course the billionaire John Henry's oh-so-liberal Boston Globe will never mention such facts, and will gush about how wonderful it is that hard-working personal care attendants don't even receive a living wage.
